The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg is deeply disturbed by and unequivocally condemns the ignorant and upsetting display depicting the gates of the Auschwitz concentration camp at the Hanover Halloween Parade.
The depiction of these painful symbols - outside of an educational setting - is never acceptable. This incident sadly reflects the unsettling rise in hate, ignorance, and antisemitism in Pennsylvania and across the nation.
We welcome the swift condemnation of this incident from the leadership of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg and join them in hopes that this incident can be an educational opportunity to bring awareness to why and how these images are disturbing and harmful.
Our community, the synagogues, and local Jewish agencies are in the process of contacting officials at the institutions involved and extending an invitation to partner for opportunities that may bring better understanding to the history of these symbols and images and help to ensure that “Never Again” is a reality.
